How to Start Meditating in 3 Minutes

By Elle Daily

You don't need a special cushion, a quiet mountaintop, or a free hour. You need three minutes and a little willingness to be right here.

Three minutes is enough

Meditation is simply the practice of coming back to the present moment. You can do that in three minutes just as well as thirty. Starting small takes the pressure off, and it makes it easy to show up every day. A tiny practice you actually do will always beat a big one you only dream about.

Let's sit together

  1. Get comfortable. Chair, couch, floor, wherever feels good. Let your shoulders melt down and rest your hands.
  2. Set a timer for three minutes so you can let go of the clock.
  3. Close your eyes, or let your gaze go soft.
  4. Feel your breath. Notice it moving at your nose or in your belly. Nothing to fix, just notice.
  5. When your thoughts drift, smile and come back. Drifting is what minds do. Each time you return, you're practicing presence.
  6. When the timer rings, take one last slow breath and carry that calm into your day.

Keeping it going

Tie your three minutes to something you already do, like your morning tea or the moment you wake up. If you miss a day, no worries. Just begin again. After a week or two, you might feel like sitting a little longer, and that's lovely. Staying at three minutes is lovely too.

Notice how you feel afterward. Maybe a little softer, maybe a little quieter inside. Let that feeling be your guide.
